Wrongful termination is one of the most common labour disputes in Jordan, yet many employees are unaware that the law provides broad protection and the right to significant compensation.

What is Wrongful Termination?

Under Jordanian Labour Law No. 8 of 1996, termination is wrongful if it is without legitimate cause, due to union activity, pregnancy, sick leave, maternity leave, or discrimination based on gender, religion, or political affiliation.

Entitlements

  • End-of-service gratuity: one month's salary per year of service.
  • Notice pay: one month per year, up to three months.
  • Unused annual leave balance.
  • Wrongful termination compensation as determined by the labour court.

Practical Tip

Always keep copies of your employment contract, pay slips, and written communications with your employer. The stronger your documentation, the stronger your case. The legal deadline is one year from termination — act immediately.
