Lawyer's Oath in Jordan and the Client's Right to Responsible Representation
Why this is timely
On 3 September 2026, the Ministry of Justice announced that 39 new lawyers took the legal oath in the presence of the Bar president. The oath is not merely ceremonial; it recalls that the lawyer-client relationship is rooted in integrity, independence, confidentiality, and respect for law.
What may a client expect?
A client may ask for a clear scope of engagement, whether a specific or general power of attorney is necessary, and a realistic explanation of risks, deadlines, and fees. The client should receive copies of key documents and procedural updates without promises of an outcome no lawyer can guarantee.
Mutual duties
- The client should disclose the complete facts and provide original documents promptly.
- The lawyer should maintain confidentiality, avoid conflicts, and report material developments.
- Record fees and scope in writing, including work outside the engagement.
- Grant broad authority or financial powers only when necessary and understood.
Choosing counsel
Ask about actual experience, who will attend and follow the matter, required documents, and the update process. In urgent matters, identify the appeal or procedural deadline before detailed discussion.
